Since its inception in 1994, an increasing number of healthcare workers and pregnant families have had the benefit of giving and receiving care through the CenteringPregnancy® model. Awareness of the model and the number of sites offering Centering group care steadily grows. In 2001, the strength and size of the organization led its leaders to make the step of creating a new non-profit corporation--The Centering Pregnancy and Parenting Association, Inc. ("CPPA").

The benefits of this new structure are numerous. Most importantly, it reflects the mission of Centering--to change the paradigm of the care of the pregnant woman and family--and assures that it will be accomplished exclusively for the benefit of pregnant women and their families and those involved in their care. It also opens up new sources of funding that will help advance the model.

As part of this structure, we offer CPPA Memberships that provide many benefits and keep you connected. We have also established a Giving Fund, which allows tax-deductible donations at any level. A new Board of Directors that will provide guidance and oversight of the mission of CPPA, including its financial stability, recently has replaced the founding Board. In June 2004, this group met in Connecticut for an extended session focused on identifying the current needs of the organization, developing a committee structure, and outlining a work plan. Vera Keane, CNM, one of the founding members of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, is on the Advisory Board and shared with the Board her vision of CenteringPregnancy® within the current health care system and pressing needs of women and families.
